Horizon Europe is the European Union’s flagship seven-year funding programme for research and innovation for the 2021–2027 period. The programme promotes collaboration between research and innovation institutions in EU Member States and Partner Countries, including African countries, through participation in international project consortia addressing shared global challenges.

The MRIC, as the National Contact Point for the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme, hosted an Information Session on Horizon Europe on Thursday, 2 April 2026 at the Amphitheatre, Telecom Campus, The Core Building, Ebene Cybercity.

​

The session brought together 108 stakeholders from Mauritius’ research and innovation ecosystem, including representatives from public and private tertiary education institutions, research organisations, NGOs and industry.

​

The event was held under the aegis of the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, with the cooperation of the Global Service Facility (GSF) of the European Union. It aimed to raise awareness and strengthen the capacity of potential applicants, including universities, research centres and SMEs, to access Horizon Europe funding opportunities.

The programme featured interventions by Prof. Theesan Bahorun, Executive Director of MRIC; Dr. Khemduth Singh Angateeah, Chairperson of MRIC; and Dr. the Hon. Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research.

​

An expert from the EU’s Global Service Facility provided participants with an overview of Horizon Europe, its objectives, structure and main instruments, as well as information on work programmes, destinations, calls and topics. Participants were also guided through the process of moving from an idea to a project, including registering for an EU account, identifying upcoming calls, building international consortia and developing competitive project proposals.

The session further introduced participants to key Horizon Europe resources, including the EU Funding & Tenders Portal, EU Partner Search, Horizon Europe Academy, Horizon Europe Dashboards and CORDIS, providing practical tools to support engagement with the programme.

​

The session concluded with a question-and-answer segment followed by networking, providing participants with an opportunity to exchange views and explore potential avenues for collaboration.

​

Through initiatives such as this information session, MRIC continues to support the Mauritian research and innovation community in strengthening international engagement, developing collaborative partnerships and accessing global funding opportunities.
