Executive Director of the MRIC

The Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC) has been very responsive on the challenges of research and innovation in a vast range of sectors which underlines our continued devotion to transform Mauritius into the future we want it to be.

One of our main achievements so far this year is having successfully rolled out the Call for Proposals – Proof of Concept Scheme, in line with the National Roadmap for Research & Innovation 2023-2027. So far, we have seen great interest in this initiative: 68 applications were received and already 10 promising projects got approved. This scheme exemplifies our dedication to fostering innovation and supporting projects that have the potential to transform our society.

In the area of space exploration, MRIC has taken significant steps with the hosting of the 1st International Space Symposium, bringing together global experts to discuss the future of space science. Our partnership with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has also borne fruit with the upcoming India-Mauritius Joint Satellite project. The NEREUS project, completed in collaboration with the Surrey Space Centre, is another example of how we are leveraging space related technology to address critical issues such as illegal fishing within our Exclusive Economic Zone.

MRIC's commitment to intellectual property and innovation was highlighted during the World Intellectual Property Day seminar. We emphasized the critical role of IP in driving sustainable development. The event featured renowned speakers and provided a platform for discussing how innovation can be harnessed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

The National Innovation Challenge, now in its third edition, continues to inspire creativity and ingenuity among Mauritians. With 161 applications and 26 finalists, the challenge culminated in an award ceremony where 9 winners were recognized, including a Special Jury Award to a convicted detainee, showcasing that innovation knows no boundaries.

The 2024 National Productivity and Quality Excellence Awards are clear testaments that our endeavours have not fallen on barren lands. The MRIC was honored with a Silver Award for the Comprehensive Revamping and Creation of Schemes by the SISM Team, and a Bronze Award for the Space Programme, further validating our work and dedication.

Our involvement in the regional EU project on STI for SDGs Roadmaps in Africa also underscores our dedication to tackling pressing health challenges, particularly Non-Communicable Diseases in Mauritius.

Looking ahead, the MRIC is poised to continue its journey of innovation and excellence. Upcoming projects, including the TWENex initiative and the Regional Research and Innovation Platform, promise to further solidify our role as a catalyst for positive change in Mauritius and the region.

These accomplishments are not just milestones; they are a testament to the collective efforts of all those involved in advancing research and innovation. Together, we are building a resilient and innovative future for Mauritius, where technology and creativity drive progress and create lasting impact.
